After a cold morning and a long bus journey north, Mackie U13s took to the pitches knowing it would be a tough test first match back. Despite the chance to socialise on the bus, the combination of winter rustiness, time off over Christmas, and snow-related postponements showed early on as the boys took a little time to settle into the game.

Mackie struck first with Moray responded well. Freddie and Finlay B crossing for early tries, both converted by Haz, who showed excellent composure from the tee in blustery conditions.

The opening exchanges were evenly matched, with Moray keeping the scoreboard ticking before the first break.

As the game progressed, Mackie’s muscle memory and teamwork began to shine through. The boys started to move the ball with confidence, creating space and making the most of opportunities when they arose. Tries from Freddie, Haz, Leon, and Finlay B kept Mackie in the contest, with Haz continuing to impress with his kicking accuracy despite the wind.

Moray fielded a full squad, which meant Mackie had to dig deep with limited substitutions. Tired legs and lungs were evident, but credit must go to the players for their work rate and resilience. The one-sub approach allowed the coaches to rotate positions smartly, maintaining pressure and energy across the pitch.

As energy levels struggled in the last 15 minutes that felt like an hour saw Moray rally with several great scores of their own, but Mackie held firm.

A late try from Freddie, again calmly converted by Haz, helped secure a well-earned 45–35 victory.

Overall, this was a brilliant example of the team-first mentality that defines this U13 group. Plenty to be proud of, and lots to build on as the season continues.
