A rugby ball handling warm up was quickly followed by a 9 v 9 game on a full sized playing area.
The next set of activities were designed to improve core strength and to help "square up". These were under timed conditions and each mini squad changed over every 3 minutes.
Some basic techniques on the touch line were designed to improve body positions to contest possession. Toes were ground bound, heels were sky high and heads were neutral. It was all about technique and not power! These were developed further by using tackle bags and rucking pads to help smash the glass.
Back into the final 9 v 9 game where the game coach introduced the "hit the dirt" to encourage players to practice their rucking skills and show how to have good contests for possession.
At the final take a knee/ gather round the players were asked to remember what the key ideas for the session were. "Square up, contest possession, toes ground bound, heels sky high and heads neutral" seemed to be the general response.
Remember to ask your rugby brain what is the 1 thing I need to stop doing and the 1 thing I need to start doing to improve my rugby skills.
Toes, heels & head Tastic Peeps!
