Ellon 7's started off well with an hours wait due to the Stirling team bus breaking down. Mackie were in a pool with Grammar Garioch and Wanderers. Unfortunately Wanderers turned up with 2 x players and Garioch turned up with 5 players. The decision was made to combine the two squads, so off the bat we were playing one less game. Just as the tournament started the heavens opened up with a torrent of rain that never stopped the whole day and a cold breeze just to get the teeth chattering. After what seemed to be an age we finally took to the field to play Grammar, Grammar took the lead and Mackie fought back to level the score before going ahead, there was some great defensive tackling from Mathew Davis, but Mackie were not firing on all cylinders and let Grammar in to level the game, and that is how it finished 2-2. The next game against Garioch mirrored the first game, after a sustained attack, Garioch turned over the ball and managed to pass it to what seemed to be the only player they had on the pitch, a very talented attacking center who had just enough space on the touch line to run the length of the pitch and score, this was the last play and the game finished 2-2. We managed to go through the pool in second place and played Stirling in the semifinal. A very spirited performance from the boys and a hard game with a couple of injuries sustained. Stirling ran out winners but Mackie gave it their all with a very hearty performance. 3rd place play off was against Ellon , it was a bit too and fro until Mackie scored from a long re start kick which Aidan Smith chased down, the Ellon guy fumbled to recover the ball and Aiden got his reward and picked the ball up to score. This turned the game and Mackie ran out worthy winners in the end, to finish third overall.
