Last home game of 2015

Sunday saw the last home game for the current S2 squad against Dundee Eagles.
Following on from the previous match with Dundee the boys expected a close contest, and they were all well up for the challenge. Dundee kicked off and Mackie received and started working their way up the pitch with probing attacks from the formidable back row of Liam Dreelan, Fraser Lindsay, and Ben Morrison. After a few rucks the ball was passed out to the backs who attempted to break down the Dundee defense. It was from a ruck that Ben quickly turned over the ball and sprinted down the touch line to score the first try after just 7 minutes. Robbie Crighton stepped up to take the conversion, thankfully for us he had remembered his kicking boots scoring 50% of the conversions. This was the pattern for the first period of the match with some excellent inter play between the Mackie forwards and backs. The second try came when Ewan Silver was attacking down the left wing and was tackled short, the ball was recycled and Matthew Davies made a run for the line, offloading before contact to Liam and then loop to receive the ball back and continue his attack, the run was completed with another offload to Eoin Vaughan who scored in the corner. Dundee re started and worked to probe the Mackie defense, but the boys were having none of it with Dominic Lawson and Sean Sims putting up a strong defensive performance. Once again the ball was turned over by Ben at the break down, and quick as a flash he attacked the Dundee line to score the second of his five try's. Mackie’s set piece was working well, but there was a secondary battle ongoing between the two scrums half’s who were both very committed at scrum time, in the end I think Mackie's Andrew Scott adapted better and came out on top, setting up Ben for his third try that came from a quick pass from the base of a scrum. This brought the first period to an end.

The second period started off with Mackie receiving the ball from the kick off and with some slick backs play Ethan broke the Dundee defense at pace and scored under the posts. Dundee weren’t for letting Mackie have it all there on way and scored a try with some good inter play between their forwards and backs. Mackie restarted with Josh Law attacking from inside center only to be tackled, Ben and Fraser were on hand quickly to recycle the ball and with a couple of passes between them they managed to bring Josh back into the attack for him to score in the corner. The game followed a similar pattern with Ben scoring a further 3 try’s. Eoin also got a second try when he cut a very good attacking line which cut the Dundee defense wide open allowing him to score. Ethan also got a second try which came about from a backs move worked at pace and with some slick ball handling unlocked the Dundee defense which resulted in a score under the posts. A good win for the S2 squad made better by the performance of the entire team.
