Continued improvement showed solid win

Great day for a game of Rugby the Mackie S1/S2 squads managed to field two teams to play against Huntly and Montrose.
The Mackie v Montrose game started well with both teams having a go in the middle of the pitch , with a good defensive showing from both sides. The first break came from Mackie with the ball being passed along the line to Murray A who scored in the corner. This was the pattern of the game with some well worked tries from open play, and the usual break away from Mathew Davis who on this occasion got himself a hat trick. Mackie didn’t have it all their own way as the score line may suggest, Montrose made a game of it in the middle of the pitch, as they have a couple of very hard and direct runners who were shut down very quickly by the Mackie defence and only broke the line once . As the game progressed Mackie took control with several line breaks from Fraser, Eoin and Nathan ,and some set moves orchestrated by our standoff Ethan Thomas with a try from the base of the scrum up the blindside being the pick of the bunch. We have been working on the link between forwards and backs and also line speed in defence, it is good to see the boys putting ideas from training into match play. As per previous games the newer S2 players were introduced with Euan Silver almost scoring a try if only he had held onto the ball from Eoin it would have capped a great move., Max Nehring scored for a second week on the trot and seems to be learning and improving after each game. The best cheer of the day came when Levi Peddie scored after catching the ball from a line out. This seemed to give him a boost in confidence as he was hitting rucks and mauls like a pro afterwards. There is still a lot to work on as we were winning a lot of rucks then losing the ball as it wasn’t secured at the base. As the game progressed the handling and decision making lost a bit of focus, but this was put right at half time and the boys did as requested. Another good win for the combined age group with a lot of positive play from all involved.
