10 try score for S2's

The 28th Sept saw the first home game of the season for the S2 squad against Ellon, The boys were well up for the game and the weather conditions couldn't have been much better. Due to the lack of numbers from Ellon we played a thirteen a side game. This didn’t suit the S2’s as we had been planning all week for a 15 a side game. The early exchanges with Ellon were competitive until the deadlock was broken by Ben Morrison who scored one of his five tries by carving a path up the middle of the pitch to score under the posts. As from past experiences we knew that the breakdown would be heavily contested with Ellon, and today’s game was no different with both teams having equal success, this game showed that we have some work to do at the breakdown with regard to hitting the ruck and committing numbers to the ruck which is all part of the players decision making process being actively working on. The plan for the day was to get the ball out wide and play our offloading game. This seemed to work as we ran in 10 tries to Ellon's 4 with the Mackie tries coming from both forwards and backs. Not to be too critical on this as the attack running was good, but the coaches would like to see more positive and direct running lines and at pace . The most positive aspect of today’s game is that we were able to blood three new players who committed themselves well. The game for the coaches was interesting as we tried different boys in different positions trying to find the perfect blend, a work still in progress. I must thank all the boys for turning up and putting in a hard shift especially Ewan Dominick and Sean for their efforts.
