Why do we give the opposition at head start?

Holidays meant that this was a combines S1/S2 fixture. The sun shone and the pitch was in good condition. Ellon were great hosts, and gave us a good ref. Despite the score line they also gave us a good game. Key players gave us the edge, but this was another competitive game and the whole team had to work hard.

We gave Ellon an easy try straight from the KO. It seems that Mackie think tackling is something that starts ten minutes after the KO! Ellon also cleaned us out at the ruck. They were well drilled, and consistently drove us off ball we had taken in. This was a problem in the first game against Ellon and remains a problem.

That said, there were many good things about our performance. Firstly, having give Ellon a head start, we got straight back into the game with a well worked try from a lineout throw to the front of the line. Lineout and scrum worked well. The backs moved the ball well, even through they continue to line up too shallow. Wingers need to go for the corner, not cut inside, but overall hands were much better than last week and back line worked pretty well. Good interplay was needed to score several of the tries. Defensively, we had a defensive line (this continues to improve) and worked very hard to hold Ellon off when they did get close to our line. Line speed remains a problem, but Ellon were not quick enough to really make the most of the opportunities we gave them, other teams will exploit this.

All squad players got game time and everyone aquitted themselves well.

Well done to everyone, and thanks to all parents who came to support and provided taxi service!
