Solid performance by a very strong u15 team

Report on Mackie U15 game against Perthshire, 2nd October 2016
On a glorious early October day, Mackie U15’s travelled to Perth to take on Perthshire, a team they had soundly beaten in the first game of the season at Redcloak. The warm sunshine conferred the last vestiges of summer, offering the perfect conditions for the running rugby that Mackie enjoy. The pitch however was a little greasy from a heavy overnight dew. The game followed the expected script with Mackie dominating in the loose and scoring freely when they strung their passes together. By half time Mackie were a comfortable 39 points up and it seemed another large score was on the cards. SRU rules decree that once 50 unanswered points are reached the game should end and switch to being a development game, one with more emphasis on training than competition. And so it turned out within 10 minutes of the second half when a further trio of tries pushed the score to 56-0. Another comfortable win against a rather tackle-shy team.
The game started slowly however with Mackie taking their customary 10 minutes to get into gear. Callum scored the first try from inside the opposition 22 after the forwards had won clean ruck ball. Tom Meyer converting. Tom Meyer then scored on the blind side after a break by stand-off Logan Grant from a scrum. Logan Grant then broke through for a try of his own, shrugging aside weak Perthshire tackling. Two tried then followed tries from full back Findly Rhind, the second showing silky footwork to side step through the Perthshire defence. A further try by Callum from a 5 yard scrum and two conversions by Tom Meyer saw Mackie lead at 41-0 half time. In the second half two quick tries were scored by winger Tom Robertson and a further one by Matthew Buchanan saw the score reach 56-0 when the match was halted and it reverted to development status. Another easy win for Mackie. Sterner tests will come and here’s hoping that the Mackie players can raise their game against more challenging opponents.
