Mackie U15 game against Ellon

Report on Mackie U15 game against Ellon, 25th September 2016
Throughout their age group progression a trip to Ellon has invariably meant easy pickings for the Mackie U15 team. Numerous games have been played and comfortable victories have always ensued generally against an Ellon team. As players mature however and physically develop, the balance can change. Mackie U15’s took on their Ellon counterparts at Ellon on a sunny but breezy late September day. Good conditions for rugby. Would Mackie find the flair and continuity that has been a trademark of their season so far? Playing on a small and rather tight pitch, Mackie had the wind in their favour in the first half. The away support duly expected Ellon be blown away. As it turned out Mackie won again by a large score, but this time it flattered them and felt harsh on a battling Ellon team who are clearly improving in technique and physicality. The final score was 51-5 to Mackie and a try count of 9 to 1. It was a game dominated by forward play and fractured by numerous penalties, particularly against Mackie who were far too often found to be offside pushing up on their opponents before they should have been. Something that needs worked on.
The first Mackie try set the standard for much of the day. It was scored by Oscar Burslem after a forward drive from 5 yard penalty. Ellon then replied with a try of their own, poor tackling by a sleepy Mackie team allowing a fast Ellon centre to break through from a penalty on the 22 almost unopposed. The second Mackie score saw captain Alex Dunlop score from another Mackie 5 yard penalty. The Mackie backs had a scrappy performance and suffered from the strong wind and tight pitch, but they did cross the line 3 times. Try number 3 was scored by winger Tom Robertson on an overlap created by improved Mackie passing. Try 4 saw the forwards push Ellon over from a 5 yard lineout. With Tom Meyer slotting two conversions it was 24-5 at half time. In the second half winger Tom Meyer scored from some slick passing after number 8 Jack Malloy had made a blind side break from the base of the scrum. The sixth try saw Oscar Burslem score from a short pick up and drive at a ruck in the Ellon 22. Alex Dunlop then scored his second try from a penalty on the Ellon 22, breaking through weak Ellon tackling. Try number 8 was the pick of them with full back Findlay Rhind showing a clean pair of heels on the overlap carved out by some quick Mackie passing. Try number 9 was scored by man-of-the-match captain Alex Dunlop from another 5 yard penalty as Ellon infringed after Findlay Rhind had snaked his way through a jaded Ellon team. The game was over. Another conversion by Tom Meyer made the final score 51-5. Another big win but one that was tainted by too many infringements and some sloppy back play
