Match Report – Under 15’s Mackie v Huntly 30.8.15
What a cracking day for rugby. The players were guaranteed to be on time with plenty of warm ups as Chief Superintendent Deputy Grant called them to arrive 2 ½ hours in advance!
The sunshine mad an appearance on the debut game of the season. With guest appearance of Ben, just back from training with the Jnr All Blacks in NZ!
Fraser, Captain Pugwash with his luminous orange boots headed the team onto the pitch minus the pink tutus we were all expecting to see.
The warm up on the pitch was interesting, the diddy men boot check was successful, no one failed muster.
Liam D as forwards vice-captain rounded up his crew well. Ethan was backs vice-captain and managed to gather his flock nicely.
The team were shown the way by watching the Under 16’s game before them so the pressure was on to emulate the outstanding performance!
Mackie won the toss and kicked off with their first try by Harry within the first 30s of the game! An excellent conversion by Ben showed that his All Black training was proving fruitful.
A cracking line up caught by Drew resulted in a try by Aiden five minutes into play.
The All Black training failed as Ben missed the conversion due to a sideways gust of wind. A flying tackle from Liam got the ball back into Mackie’s hands.
Fraser, a bit distracted with his hair-do, nearly missed a chance to move the ball on! A beast of a try was scored by Nathan ten minutes in. The All Black’s training back to the front of Ben’s memory resulted in a good conversion. A robbing tackle on the back line with Euan tanned Robertson losing his try as he strove to centre his score position!
Some high tackling on Drew nearly saw him decapitated. A scrum at 15 mins was lost to Huntly again. Butter fingers Mackie players struck again. A cracking try by Drew at 18 mins was converted by Ben the Conversion Kid but then sadly a forward pass lost them the chance of another try.
Decision making not being Mackie’s strong point with Fraser running straight into the path when the field was open to the other side, perhaps his hair blocked his view?
A good catch on the line out resulted in. An excellent tackle by Max then Nathan got the ball back into Mackie play.
Levi’s tackling sent an opponent flying, all that training paying off! After a little pep talk, and naughty spot time, Euan tanned Robertson was allowed back on! An excellent tackle by Fraser followed and the tension was mounting. Huntly nearly got the ball near their end but Euan R who had reprieved himself by sprinting and walloping a kick to put the ball back up the right end.
After a tense stand off with lots of action , Matthew got a try in the 34th min. Euan did a cracking drop kick conversion from the side just as the half time whistle blew, gaining him some Brownie points.
Chief Superintendent Deputy Grant plied the boys with pearls of wisdom at half time.
After Huntly trying to escort Finlay off the field the ball was passed to Aiden who saved the play and scored a try. The conversion was sent wayward by a gale force gust.
Mr Ben, the All Blacks trainee scored a cracking try and Finlay converted to keep Mackie in the lead.
Drew then score another try but you could see the cockiness setting in, the comb rising and Euan got the conversion, obviously partying all night hadn’t affected his game!
Huntly scored their first try but the flat kick missed the conversion.
A high, dirty tackle almost took Aiden’s ears off but went unnoticed by the Ref! A crashing scrum saw failure on both sides to keep their feet. A cracking try by Harry showed Mackie were not shaken by Huntly’s earlier try.
A straight run down the iddle by Drew resulted in yet another try and conversion by Euan the party boy kept the gap widening.
At 19 mins another try by Matthew ensued, it was a hard run with butter fingered Nathan striking again also the hair by Fraser getting in the road! Finlay showed his nimble foot movements by completing a good conversion from the side at 22 mins.
Drew sprinted by the opposition to get in with a sliding try, duly converted by Finlay’s cracking feet.
Euan got the ball going down the field passing to Matthew for his hat-trick try at 24 mins! The conversion was missed this time as Finlay’s twinkle toes were getting tired.
Another cracking try by Matthew and Finlay’s twinkle toes were back on form to get another conversion. A little push off from Drew and he just couldn’t be stopped and another try scored in the 28min. The wind took the conversion wide. VICTORY!
An exhausted, happy bunch of Mackie lads then de-briefed with Chief Superintendent Deputy Grant! A rendition of Happy Birthday, led by Nathan was then sung to Coach Lindsay, currently out of the game, over the phone before the boys retreated to the changing rooms.
Final score Huntly 5: Mackie heaps!!
