Having been on the end of a few beatings by Stirling County in the past the boys knew it was going to be a tough game. Having said that they were determined to right the past wrongs and with a strong team put together with help from the S2’s and Mark New stepping down to play in his rightful age group the sides took to the field in the sun.
It didn’t take long for Stirling County to show their dominance, after spreading the ball wide their winger sprinted down the touch line but good tracking back by the Mackie defence meant the managed to stop them gaining anymore ground.
Stirling County were the first team to strike and scored near the posts allowing for an easy conversion, Mackie did hit back with 2 try’s from Mark New with one of them being converted by Andrew MacArthur. But some poor first up tackles allowing Stirling County to keep gaining ground saw one of their forwards manage to push over the line near the posts for another try that was converted, giving the away team a narrow half time lead.
Half Time: Mackie 12 – 14 Stirling County
After some stern words at half time from coaches Mark Beadie and Hamish Grant we hoped to see the boys continue on a strong first half performance against a very good away side.
The second half was proving to be just as tough as the first and the away side obviously knew that Mackie were not going to give up until the final whistle, after scoring an early unconverted try Stirling then proceeded to take the opportunity to kick 2 penalties to edge themselves into an ever growing lead.
Although Mackie did go on to score 2 try’s in the second half from Harry Sherriffs and Andrew MacArthur, which also saw Andrew add another conversion to his name, Stirling County also managed another 2 try’s and a conversion giving them the win and progressing onto the Cup semi finals.
The Mackie boys can be proud as they fought right to the end and never gave up, the Stirling coaches and parents both saying this was the hardest game their boys have had all season.
