Sensational 16's cruise in Caithness!
Awesome! Clinical! Fast! and Fearsome! Mackie U16's came north and swept Caithness away in a storm of relentless rugby!
Caithness 7 Mackie 37. The quality of this U16's team just gets better as they grow in self-belief. Give them a challenge and they rise to it.
A two day trip with rough digs and few comforts, a howling gale..? bring it on!
Right from the start Mackie took the game to their hosts and at times their handling of the ball was simply superb, almost as if the wind and rain were just another challenge to be swept aside. 4 tries up by half-time without reply and looking focussed on their task, Mackie made this game a joy to watch and they were appreciated by the brave souls in the Caithness home support who realised a proper rugby team had hit town!
In the second half, three further tries and a conversion were added and a soft score conceded to give Caithness something for their contribution to a good game, but in the end Mackie were applauded from the field after an awesome performance which was thrilling to watch. Problem areas in the past such as lineout and scrum, were significantly better and set moves were executed with applomb. On this outing it was the back division who took most of the glory but the core of this side is still it's forward pack, who always want the ball and like contact. However, the fearsome centre to wing attack produced a handling display at pace which could teach professional sides a thing or two and the finishing was clinical.
Even when put under pressure by a decent Caithness team, Mackie blitzed their way out of trouble.
It would be unfair to dwell on individuals as the whole squad played so well for each other, adapting to changes made and never allowing their concentration to slip; however Greg Hartley (with 4 tries), Sam Howard for sheer tenacity and Danny Waghorn as symbolic of a menacing pack, deserve mention.
