P4 Trip to Perthshire

Sunday 1st March was the first day of Spring

Mackie P4 headed to Perth to play rugby in conditions that varied from bad to horrible..what spring? After a brief warm up we were on top play the stonger of Perths two sides. In keeping with Mackie tradition we started slowly and gifted the opponents a two try start.After a few "reminders" from the coaches the second half saw a much improved performance in which the two tries were split evenly.

Second up were the smaller Perth side .By now Mackie were in their stride and the opponents struggled to make any impression on the Mackie defence. Mackie controlled the ball and created tries by moving the ball away from traffic allowing the runners to score tries and Mackie ran out comfortable winners against a game but limited side

Last official game was against Falkirk. In scenes similar to those at Murrayfield the day before Mackie dominated possession but a mixture of inexperienced decisions and excellent defence saw them trailing 1_0 at half time. The second half was more of the same, Red waves of attacks floundering on a Blue wall. Falkirk broke away twice to record a 3_0 scoreline. This was an example of teamwork triumphing .Mackie put so much effort in on a pitch that now resembled the Somme but too often we neglected to put into practice what we do so well in training.

Hopefully we will learn from this as Tournament time comes around. Last up we took part in a joint game with both Perth squads. Typically this was the best our boys played all day.Passes were made before contact, good support lines were run, and runners really attacked the space.The Mackie boys contributed all the tries for one side. In all it was a pretty good effort in our first competitive games for 3 months with only 7 players.
