Another tough game
We needed to up our game to win this one.
Moray surprised us from the moment they got off the Bus!. They were much bigger than expected, and from the start used the size of their forwards to good effect. From the off they secured a succession of good ruck ball, drove down field and executed a good try. Our rucking and tackling was pretty feeble by comparison, with too many players standing off and leaning.
We bolstered our pack with some early substitutions, and this made us more competitive at the breakdown. Rugby is a team game and having a full squad with subs always makes a difference, so thank you everyone and well done.
Lineout and scrum were also pretty awful. Moray used their size advantage to good effect and we compounded the problem with some pretty dull play at lineout and poor body position at the scrum.
That said, once we started to get a reasonable supply of ball from the rucks, the back line worked pretty well. The policy of pass it out wide to fast wingers and full back, works as well in an S1/S2 games as it does in International rugby. We scored lots of good tries!. Remember rugby is a team game and it is the hard work of the forwards and 9/10/12/13 that provide the opportunity for 11/14/and 15 to score.
The pattern of the game became reasonably well established. Moray continued to run hard and straight, needing some quality tackling and rucking, but when we got the ball we could run round them reasonably regularly.
Thank you to the super subs who did not expect to play. thank you to Heather and the team for the catering and thank you to Erik for doing the ref duties.
Well done again.
