Tough game - good rugby
Grammar made us work very hard, much improved skill and game play by both sides.
Our first game for 3 months so no surprise that we started slowly. Grammar were competitive at the breakdown, and had a very fast defensive line speed that we struggled to work with.
We had a game plan which was to run lots of blue ball, tie in the defense and then spread it wide. It is a sign of how far the team has come, that we can now discuss a game plan and I can expect it to be implemented. That said it was only implemented in parts!, but eventually we scored 2 of our 3 tries by doing what we planned.....well done.
Line out and scrum worked well, lots of good ball carrying, ruck was good. In defense we had guard and shield....but about 3 players in each position - still need work on this. Our backs defensive line speed was not as good as theirs, we need to learn from them.
However, after a nil all first 20, a 1:1 second 20 we pulled away with 2 well worked scores in the third twenty.
I am really really please with the way the team has matured so far. Players are all making good contributions, (particularly those coming off the bench), supporting each other and implementing what we have discussed on the training ground.
