Report on Mackie U15 game against Gordonstoun, Sept. 10th 2016
After a difficult match the week before Mackie U15’s took on the challenge of Gordonstoun U15 at Redcloak. A dry and windy day but good conditions for the running rugby that is the U15’s trade mark. And so this proved to be the case with Mackie humbling a poor Gordonstoun team 53-0. The opposition looked the part with a set of large forwards and backs. But when it came to skill and commitment in the tackle, the Gordonstoun team flattered to deceive. A well drilled Mackie team made short work of the game, dominating particularly when playing against the wind in the first half. The game was over as a contest at half time. The second half was scrappier with too many dropped balls and knock-ons caused by the strengthening cross-wind.
Mackie attacked right from the start stringing passes together and recycling the ball. James Cochrane scored the first try from a 5 yard penalty after Gordonstoun were caught handling on the ground. The second try from winger Tom Meyer was a gem with neat passing releasing Findlay Rhind on the overlap who then passed back inside to Tom to glide over and round behind the posts. The third try was scored by Owen Stewart taking the ball from scrum half on the blind side of a ruck in the opposition 22. Jack Malloy then scored a try from an Oscar Burslam offload after he had broken through weak Gordonstoun tackling. A further two first half tries were scored by Tom Meyer and captain, Alex Dunlop. At half time Mackie were 34-0 up with Gordonstoun never seeming to have touched the ball. Mackie scored a further three tries in the second half from James Cochrane, Oscar Burslam and Findlay Rhind. The last try emphasised the gulf in ability between the teams when slick from passing by the Mackie backs yielded an overlap for full back Findlay to run in unopposed. Tom Meyer converted 4 times to secure the 53-0 win.
