Super '16's advance to cup semi
41 -38 In one of the most thrilling and closely fought encounters seen at Redcloak, the U16's overcame Howe to progress to the cup semi-final
This match had everything for players and spectators and by modern standards of entertainment; should have been on the telly!
Howe of Fife arrived at Redcloak making all the usual complimentary comments about a close game while bristling with confidence that they would beat us; they left 3 hours later suitably humbled.
Mackie under 16's are now an established and cohesive side who know their own capabilities and can vary their game plan to suit opponents and conditions. They played this game in a sytematic manner in what was an end to end rugby match and despite being behind at several points, refused to panic and emerged triumphant!
The final score of 41-38 was achieved with a converted try in the last 5 minutes which in the end was thoroughly deserved. The total of seven tries and three conversions to six tries and four conversions, tells the story of the game with some passgaes of play by both sides being of excellent quality. Both sides could offer advice to Andy Robinson and his Scotland charges about finishing, running lines, tenacity in forward play and most of all tackling!
This was the ultimate team performance, so I will not dwell on individuals, but while our pack was resolute and well marshalled by captain Matt Foster, it was the backs who stole the show with clinical finishing from centre out to wings built on a platform of quick ball and great pace.
All 21 squad members who contributed on the day did the club and themselves proud. Orkney will be down on the 14th of April for the semi-final. I for one cannot wait!
