Mackie v Carnoustie
Hard work pays off
Finally the hard work on the training ground pays off!
From the whistle, the home team were up for this game, and put pressure on the visitors from the off. Fly half Mair did a great kick in behind and the chase was good, the carnoustie full back gathered well but his clearance was charged down by Mackie no8 Ross Alsop
who reacted quickest and dived on the lose ball to score, Calum Reddish adding the extras, 7-0.
This start inspired the home team and they kept the pressure on the visitors, with a penalty (Reddish) and a further try from Captain Mellis, Reddish again with the extras. Carnoustie did show they were still in the game with a try just before the break.
Half Time 17-5
Carnoustie took the game to Mackie in the second half, scoring 2 tries but crucially only one conversion.17-17
The home team were resilient though, and centre Ross Gray
added to the scoreline with a try which Reddish duly converted 24-17.
Nerves began to creep in to the Mackie team, but they kept their discipline, something the Carnoustie outfit failed to do and they gave away a penalty right in front of the posts, reddish stepped up and casually stroked the ball between the uprights, 27-17.
with only a couple of minutes to go the young home team relaxed, this was their biggest mistake as the visitors scored directly from the restart after the home team failed to gather the ball. A Typical sucker punch but more importantly Mackie had their first win, and that will do their confidence the world of good.
