Only the weather could put a dampener on the 13th Annual Mackie Mini’s Tournament this past weekend with it touch and go at one point.
This past Saturday May 10, six regional clubs including Stirling, Ellon, Aberdeen Wanderers, Deeside, Garioch and Mackie took part.
Only the weather could put a dampener on the 13th Annual Mackie Minis Tournament last weekend and it was touch and go leading up to the event.
The clubs arrived with 34 squads to take part in what has become the largest mini rugby tournament in the North East Scotland.
With the lovely Mackie Ladies (& Ciaran) slaving over a hot barbecue and serving delicious pastries donated by local families, the festival was always going to go well. This year we invited Roundtable to lure the kids between matches to cover their faces with candy floss and sweets.
As the low clouds loomed, the rugby got underway. 56 pool matches were played in all, leading up to 8 semi final matches.
The rugby was certainly of top quality with all teams giving their all for the cause. The volunteer referees keeping order on the field, whilst the hundreds of supporting families & friends were going wild with excitement.
In the end it was Mackie that prevailed in 3 of the 4 draws. P4 won the trophy against a feisty Ellon team, P6 overcame Grammar, to whom they lost to in the pools and P7 had a incredibly hard win over Stirling.
It was only a tight semi final loss to Grammar in P5’s that avoided a clean sweep.
Andrew Mitchell, President of Mackie Academy FP RFC said: “A huge thank you goes to the volunteers that helped put this tournament together.
“They include the referees, medical staff, all those that helped set the tents and facilities up and of course the catering team that kept everyone fed and watered. A special thank you to Roundtable’s kind sponsorship and donation which was much appreciated.”
Richard Cochrane, MAFPRFC Minis Coordinator added: “Mackie Minis will be back again next May getting bigger and bigger every year. Keep up to date with future Mackie FP RFC on our website www.mafprfc.org.”
