P4's flying over Perthshire mud!
By Andy Cowburn
The North Insch in Perth was the destination on Sunday for a Mackie P4 squad eager for some match practice, and a great morning it was to turn out.
The Mackie boys split into two teams of 5 (no subs) to play games against hosts Perthshire and other visitors Kirkaldy. After all the recent rain the pitches could have generously been described as "heavy" with plenty of mud to liven play up and make the ball slippier than a very slippy thing!
With no subs everyone got to play all the games and both Mackie squads put on excellent displays of rugby for the travelling mums and dads to enjoy. Kircaldy were first up and from the off the Mackie teamwork proved to hot for the Kirkaldy boys to handle with Mackie retaining possesion well to score almost at will. When Kircaldy had the ball the "big red Mackie wall" of defenders reacted well, applied pressure in al the right places resulting in many turnovers and balls won in the contact area....overall very encouraging performances.
Against Perthshire it was to be a whole lot closer with the hosts providing much stiffer opposition but as before the Mackie teamwork proved to be the difference with the boys managing to control the ball very well (even when it was 4 against 5 for a while due to a mackie injury). The work the team has put in on their tap starts is really paying off and when they decide to ruck as we see every week in training the boys look a very confident and competant outfit.
As we get closer to tournament season the competition for tournament squad places will hot up so everyone knows they have to be playing their best all of the time to stay in teams plans going forwards.
Really well done everyone, and thanks to mums & dads as ever for getting you down there to take part on what was a driech Sunday morning at worst,....we hope the rugby brought the sun out for you!
Next weekend saturday training at Mackie is moving to Ellon for the mini festival...everyone is welcome and we would advise everyone where possible to get along for much needed match practice before the 1st tournament of the season, back at Ellon towards the end of March.
P.S. If you have a team photo of the boys today please send it through or upload it onto the website, and I'll attach it to this report, many thanks. Andy.
